Family members are encouraged to take an active role in the care provided to their children at CHOC. In this CHOC Radio interview, Marta Gebo, patient and family-centered care coordinator, talks about the many ways CHOC physicians, nurses and staff partner with patients and families.
Staff support the core principles of patient and family-centered care: dignity and respect, information sharing, collaboration, and participation.
Marta explains how unique the family dynamic is in the pediatric health care setting. CHOC doesn’t define a family, but lets the patient and family tell staff who is important to them, she says. For a younger child, it may be mom and dad. For an adolescent, a boyfriend or girlfriend can play an important part in the healing process.
