If you are a young athlete, it’s important to make sure you are making sure to take care of yourself during the sports season to prevent getting burnt out. Try to make sure you are always having fun when playing sports and being active. Use these tips from Dr. Kelly Davis, pediatric sports medicine physician at CHOC, to help you stay physically and mentally healthy:
- Add variety to your workouts. Keep them fun and interesting.
- Take one to two days off each week from organized sports to rest and recover. This will also give you time to participate in other activities that you enjoy.
- Take longer breaks from sports training and competition every two to three months while focusing on other activities and cross-training. This will help prevent loss of skill or level of conditioning.
- Focus on wellness. Be in tune with your body, and look for cues to slow down or alter your training methods.
