Diet
- Start with clear liquids. If no nausea or vomiting slowly start back on regular diet. Start with light foods. Avoid spicy or greasy foods. Children will sometimes have nausea and vomiting after anesthesia.
- Your child may take any usual home medicines after discharge unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Activity
If your child received anesthesia, they may be sleepy. They may wake cranky or upset. Quiet activity only today.
- Avoid heavy lifting, sports or active play using the affected arm for 1 week.
- No swimming for 1 week.
Pain Control
You may give your child acetaminophen or ibuprofen if needed for pain.
When to call the doctor:
- Call with chills or fever (temperature over 101F).
- Redness, swelling or pus at the site.
- Pain not relieved by acetaminophen and ibuprofen.
- Bleeding not controlled by pressure to site.
- Uncontrolled nausea and vomiting, or you are unable to get your child to keep down any fluids.
