Diet
- Start with clear liquids. Slowly increase to small amounts of light foods the patient usually eats. Avoid spicy or greasy foods.**
- Patient may restart any home medication unless otherwise directed by your doctor.**
Activity
- If the patient received anesthesia, they may be sleepy. They may wake up upset. Quiet activity only today. The patient may resume usual activity tomorrow.**
Complications
- Air was put into the colon for the procedure. The patient may feel bloated or have cramping in their stomach.**
- It is normal to pass large amounts of gas from their rectum.**
- Sometimes nausea/vomiting can occur after anesthesia. If this happens, keep the patient on a clear liquid diet until the nausea/vomiting resolves. Slowly advance to their regular diet when the nausea/vomiting has stopped.**
When to call the doctor
- Chills or fever (temperature over 101F)
- Persistent vomiting
- Severe or persistent abdominal pain, not resolving with passing gas
- Black, tar-like or bloody stool
- More than one tablespoon of bleeding
